POKOTABI / Penguin Cafe
ペンギンカフェ
Tucked into residential Asagayakita, Penguin Cafe serves siphon-brewed Penguin Blend, penguin lattes, Basque cheesecake, and kabosu citrus juice in a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A short walk from the north exit of Asagaya Station leads away from the bustling shopping street into the residential lanes where Penguin Cafe sits. Framed by expansive windows, the light, airy room is arranged with comfortable seating, welcoming solo readers and neighbourhood walkers pausing for a quiet moment. Adding a playful touch to the calm atmosphere, an Aibo robot dog trots cheerfully around the dining floor.
The main draw here is the combination of siphon-extracted coffee and house-made sweets. Options include the signature Penguin Blend, distinguished by its nutty aroma and subtle acidity, as well as the photogenic Penguin Latte. Desserts are varied and thoughtfully crafted, from Basque cheesecake served with a pinch of rock salt to moist brown sugar banana cake and dense black sesame soy milk pudding. From autumn into winter, the menu introduces comforting seasonal pies, including a pumpkin pie sweetened with cane sugar and a winter-limited sweet potato pie packed with tender sweet potato paste.
Thoughtful touches extend beyond coffee. Kabosu citrus juice made from orchard fruit from Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture, and balanced with raw cane sugar offers a crisp, tart palate cleanser, also available hot with aromatic steam rising from the cup. With comforting cups of hot Milo alongside classic teas and herbal infusions, the drinks list easily accommodates any time of day.
